Specialty petroleum products are critical inputs in industries ranging from rubber processing and printing inks to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, automotive components, and industrial manufacturing. Unlike conventional fuels, these products are formulated around specific performance parameters such as viscosity, solvency, thermal stability, purity, colour stability, and compatibility with other raw materials.
For manufacturers, selecting the correct petroleum-based input can influence processing behaviour, production efficiency and the properties of the finished product. This makes product consistency, application knowledge and manufacturing control particularly important.
Established in 1982, Panama Petrochem Ltd. manufactures nearly 80 variants of petroleum specialty products for domestic and international markets. Its portfolio supports multiple industrial applications through four manufacturing units in western India.
A Broad Specialty Petroleum Product Portfolio
The company’s product portfolio includes:
The importance of such a portfolio lies not simply in the number of products but in the different performance requirements they address. A process oil used in an elastomer compound, for example, performs a fundamentally different function from a highly refined white oil used as a formulation base in pharmaceutical or cosmetic products.
Rubber Process Oils for Compound Performance
Rubber Process Oils are used as processing aids and extender oils in natural and synthetic rubber formulations. Their chemistry influences compatibility with the polymer, processing characteristics, and properties such as colour stability, ageing performance, and oil retention.
Panama offers aromatic, paraffinic and naphthenic Rubber Process Oils under its PANOL range.
Aromatic process oils offer strong rubber and polymer solvency and are used in applications including tyres, tubes, belts, hoses and moulded rubber goods. Paraffinic grades provide good thermal stability and are suited to applications such as EPDM-based moulded and extruded products, heat-resistant conveyor belts and steam hoses. Naphthenic grades combine compatibility with good oxidation and colour stability, making them suitable for products including automotive tubes, light-coloured footwear and technical rubber goods.
The portfolio also includes specialty grades such as MES, RAE and TDAE for applications requiring alternatives to conventional high-aromatic process oils.
Petroleum Products for Printing Inks and Coatings
The printing ink and coating industries require petroleum-derived components with controlled properties because solvent behaviour can affect resin compatibility, viscosity, drying characteristics and ink performance.
The company’s Ink and Coating Oils portfolio includes petroleum distillates with controlled aromatic content and boiling ranges, naphthenic oils, mineral oils, black ink oils and other specialty products.
These materials support applications across heatset, coldset, offset, and web-based inks. Different viscosity and boiling-range requirements allow formulators to select products according to the printing process, resin system, and desired handling characteristics.
Petroleum Jelly can also perform functional roles in ink formulations where properties such as tack, gloss and viscosity need to be controlled.
Highly Refined White Oils for Sensitive Applications
White Oils, also known as Liquid Paraffin Oils, require a significantly higher degree of refining than many conventional industrial petroleum products.
Panama manufactures grades ranging from low to high viscosity using severely hydrotreated base oils. Depending on the grade and applicable regulatory requirements, these products are used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations including creams, lotions, ointments, hair oils and petroleum jelly.
White Oils also have industrial applications in areas such as polymer processing, food packaging, veterinary preparations and specialised coatings.
In applications of this nature, parameters including purity, odour, colour, viscosity and compliance with relevant standards become particularly important because the oil may form part of a formulation or come into contact with sensitive end products.
Manufacturing Infrastructure in India
Domestic manufacturing capability is increasingly important for industries seeking reliable specialty raw-material supply and reduced dependence on imported alternatives.
Panama operates four manufacturing units in western India:
- Ankleshwar, Gujarat
- Dahej, Gujarat
- Taloja, Maharashtra
- Daman, Union Territory
The Dahej facility uses DCS/PLC-based process-control systems, while the Ankleshwar unit houses the company’s research and development centre.
This manufacturing footprint supports production for both Indian customers and export markets while providing the infrastructure required for different specialty petroleum product categories.
Quality control is particularly important in this sector because variations in viscosity, flash point, composition, colour or other parameters can influence a customer's formulation or manufacturing process. Raw-material evaluation, process control and finished-product testing therefore form an important part of maintaining product consistency.
Application-Led Product Development
Specialty petroleum products are rarely selected only by product name. Their suitability depends on the customer's process, operating conditions, formulation and desired finished-product properties.
For example, a rubber manufacturer may evaluate process oil based on elastomer compatibility, solvency, thermal stability and ageing behaviour. An ink manufacturer may place greater emphasis on viscosity, aromatic content and boiling range. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, meanwhile, demand greater attention to purity and applicable pharmacopoeial requirements.
This application-led approach also allows specialty-product manufacturers to develop customised specifications where standard grades do not fully meet a customer's process requirements.
Panama’s R&D capabilities at Ankleshwar support the development of new and value-added products as well as customised products for customer specifications.
Indian Manufacturing with International Reach
Alongside its Indian manufacturing base, Panama exports specialty petroleum products to more than 55 countries.
The company also operates Panol Industries RMC FZE, its wholly owned subsidiary in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, serving markets across the GCC and MENA regions.
This combination of domestic production and international distribution enables an Indian manufacturer to participate in global specialty petroleum supply chains while continuing to support industries such as rubber, printing inks, resins, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, engineering and petrochemicals at home.
Strengthening India’s Specialty Petroleum Supply Chain
As Indian manufacturing becomes more specialised, the demand for technically appropriate raw materials is becoming equally important. Specialty petroleum products contribute to this ecosystem not merely as consumables, but as functional inputs that can influence processing, formulation stability, and final-product performance.
With nearly 80 specialty product variants, four Indian manufacturing facilities, in-house R&D capabilities, and experience across multiple industrial sectors, Panama Petrochem is positioned to support manufacturers looking for application-specific petroleum products and customised solutions.
